These tips fall under the heading of "musical miscellany", due to the randomness of the subjects covered. Some of these informational tidbits could be the little things that help you become a better musician.

Generally, in order to get gigs you should start with a "press kit" or "promo pack". This consists of a band biography (check out our "Helpful PDF's" link), a band photo, a well-recorded demo CD & a general setlist of the songs you play - all placed in a folder or large mailing envelope. You can also include website information, photocopied newspaper clippings/reviews of other shows you've played & additional promotional material, such as stickers or business cards.

Once you have presented or mailed your press kit to the appropriate people, don't hesitate to follow up with a phone call in a couple of days to make sure that they have received/listened to this very important package. Don't give up! Believe in your product! Persistence pays off.

Contact a music organization. If you are strictly interested in only one kind of music (or variations, thereof) or helping with musical events/education, here is a listing of some local music associations that promote their unique style of music.

If you are ever in a bind and have no tuner, the dial tone of the phone is a perfect "F" pitch.

Concentrate on making sure the beginnings and endings of songs are tight. A commanding start and finish show confidence in the material and the middle part of the song will take care of itself.

If at all possible, it is best to have a block of time set aside for you to practice - without distraction. Unplug your phone or leave it in the other room, turn off your computer or T.V., get comfortable and play. Focus on one thing and practice it until it is fluid, then progress on to the next item of interest.
